Apprenticeships
Hands-on experience working with someone knowledgable and in the field is invaluable.
Offer to help them in exchange for lessons. Scrub toilets, do paperwork, keep their supplies neat and orderly - in exchange for them sharing their knowledge and showing you how to do the skill.
Although your family is probably not going to object when you use them as guinea pigs for massage techniques that you're learning out of a book, it's a good idea to work with professionals, too. They give you a broader scope of things, and may help you decide if you really want to continue in that chosen career.
